Osteoporosis & Me

Receiving the news about my Osteoporosis diagnosis was a shock.

During a recent trip back to Sydney, I arranged a DEXA scan, something the NHS wouldn't provide. There were no symptoms such as unexplained fractures or bone pain but being 66 and having spent the last 25 years in the UK, I was worried about the lack of sunshine exposure affecting my bone health. Even until the last few years, taking vitamin D3 was not discussed as a good preventative measure for post-menopausal women; the time when we start losing our protective oestrogen at a rapid rate. There was so much about my health that I wish I’d known in my 30 and 40s.

Osteoporosis is a stealthy condition. It quietly thins your bones and reduces bone density over time, making you more prone to fractures even from minor falls. A real game-changer when it comes to independence.

When I asked my doctor about a DEXA scan before my trip, I was told I didn't meet the criteria. My response was a mix of frustration and disbelief. "So, I have to wait for unexplained fractures before I'm considered for a scan, even though I'm well over 50?" It was a wake-up call about the limitations of our (often wonderful) healthcare system and the importance of taking charge of our own health journey.
